The true scope of the devastation across the Caribbean is coming into clearer focus a few days after Hurricane Melissa roared through this part of the Atlantic basin. Here is the latest on what is happening on the ground in the Caribbean.

Caribbean Picking Up the Pieces After Catastrophic Strike by Hurricane Melissa

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing across the Caribbean following the wrath of the record-breaking Hurricane Melissa. The storm first made landfall near New Hope, Jamaica, as a Category 5 hurricane. The storm then made a second landfall in Cuba as a Category 3 event. Melissa will go down in history as one of the strongest storms to churn through the Atlantic in over 150 years, as defined by wind speeds and barometric pressure.

Most recently, Melissa passed by Bermuda as a Category 1 storm, unleashing high winds and heavy rain. Local officials acted proactively, closing the major causeway that connects the main island with St. David's Island. Schools and ferry services were also closed on Friday out of an abundance of caution.

The National Hurricane Center’s forecast map shows Post-Tropical Cyclone Melissa moving northeast across the Atlantic with winds up to 85 mph, bringing rough surf and heavy rain to Atlantic Canada through the weekend. (NOAA/NHC)
