A powerful “Triple-Threat March Megastorm” is battering two-thirds of the United States simultaneously, bringing record-shattering snowfall and blizzard conditions to the Midwest, tornado watches across the Mid-Atlantic, and widespread travel delays from coast to coast. The storm is expected to “bomb out” into a bomb cyclone as atmospheric pressure continues to drop rapidly. More than 200 million people remain in the path of this dangerous system as it continues to push eastward through Monday.

What to Know

  • Historic snowfall: Herman, Michigan, recorded 36 inches; Wausau, Wisconsin, smashed its all-time single-day record with 23.4 inches in 130 years of record-keeping.

  • Blizzard conditions ongoing: Near-zero visibility and snowfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour are making travel from Iowa to Michigan's Upper Peninsula impossible.

  • Tornado threat escalating: A rare Level 4 "Moderate Risk" is in effect from the Carolinas through D.C. and Baltimore. A Tornado Watch covers Washington, D.C. until 7:00 pm ET.

  • 484,000+ without power: Michigan is currently the hardest hit, with 132,000 outages.

  • 6,800+ flights canceled: Ground stops are in effect at Atlanta, Washington, and Charlotte, with disruptions expected to continue through Tuesday.

  • Schools closed: Districts across D.C., Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Minnesota, and Wisconsin have announced closures or early dismissals.

  • Winds up to 80 mph: Gusts could down trees and power lines across the Mid-Atlantic through Monday evening.

  • Clearing by Tuesday: The front is forecast to push off the East Coast overnight, though disruptions will linger.
