As the U.S. Southeast braces for the impacts from Imelda, Bermuda is being put on alert for Hurricane Humberto. Here is the latest on this major hurricane as it generates massive seas across the western portion of the Atlantic.

Latest Update on Hurricane Humberto

Although Hurricane Humberto has weakened slightly from its peak as a Category 5 storm, it is still a major Category 4 event as it takes aim at Bermuda. As of the Monday AM update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Humberto was spinning less than 600 miles to the south of Bermuda. The storm is forecast to skirt about 100 miles to the west and northwest of the islands late Tuesday and Wednesday. While Humberto is not likely to make a direct landfall in Bermuda, its proximity will bring rough seas, rain, and wind to the region.

Forecast models indicate Hurricane Humberto will intensify as it curves northward, posing significant wind and surge threats to Bermuda by midweek. (NOAA)

The latest models signal that Humberto will journey on a curved path across the west-central Atlantic. Humberto reached the status of a Category 5 storm for a brief time on Saturday, packing maximum sustained winds of 160 mph. These wind speeds dropped to 155 mph by Sunday morning, bringing the storm down one category designation.
