Major Pattern Shift Brings Rain and Snow to the West

The record-breaking heat is finally easing across the West, thanks to a series of storms pushing into the region from the Pacific Ocean. Here is an updated report on the timing and impacts of this developing stretch of weather affecting most of the western U.S. in the week ahead.

Record-Breaking Heat Fading in the West as Storm Train Fires Up

A trio of storms is forecast to move across the West this week, bringing an end to the hot and dry weather that has gripped the region throughout much of the month of March. It was another day of record-breaking heat on Sunday for the Desert Southwest. Daytime highs ranged between 15 and 25 degrees over the historical average for this corner of the country.

However, the weather is changing dramatically on Monday as the first of three storms pushes into the Southwest and the Four Corners region. Although this is not setting up to be a major rain event, the area should expect spotty afternoon thunderstorms to start the new work week.

Gusty winds coming along with the storm will also raise the risk of wildfires across the dry terrain. Areas that do not pick up significant moisture may also see pockets of flying dust. The chance of dry thunderstorms will further compound the risk of wildfires and areas of blowing dust that reduce visibility on the roadways. Dry thunderstorms are known for their limited rainfall paired with frequent lightning strikes, providing a fertile breeding ground for wildfire ignition.

A different storm will impact areas farther north on Tuesday. This weather maker will produce snow at the higher elevations and widespread rain for parts of California, northern Nevada, and the southern flank of Oregon and Idaho. For example, Crescent City, California, will see the moisture machine pick up overnight Tuesday, resulting in about a quarter of an inch of rain. The rain bands will intensify on Wednesday with over an inch of precipitation on tap.
