The month of May 2024 astronomy calendar will be a busy one for stargazers. A number of exciting events will highlight the night skies, including the best meteor shower of the spring season, the elusive planet Mercury making an appearance, and a full moon.

As a bonus, warmer weather this time of the year will make it more comfortable to head outside and enjoy these celestial wonders.

Here is a more detailed look at what you should keep your eyes trained on after the sun goes down this month.

Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower - May 4 - 5

There is no doubt that the top celestial highlight in the night skies in May is the Eta Aquarid meteor shower. Distinguished as the best meteor shower of the spring season, the Eta Aquarids will peak less than two weeks after the late April Lyrid meteor shower.

The peak of the Eta Aquarids will fall on the night of Saturday, May 4 and heading into the early morning hours of Sunday, May 5.

Onlookers will find the best viewing conditions between the hours of 2 am and 5 am local time. If you miss the peak of the shower on May 4 and 5, the meteors will linger for a few more days.
