May 2026 is delivering a celestial double feature that sky watchers will not want to miss. The month opens with the traditional full Flower Moon and closes with a rare Blue Moon — making May one of only a handful of months in any given decade to host two full moons. Both moons carry an additional distinction this year: they are micromoons, meaning they occur when the moon is near its farthest point from Earth, appearing slightly smaller and dimmer than an average full moon.

The Flower Moon — May 1

The first full moon of May reaches its peak at 1:23 p.m. EDT on Friday, May 1. Known as the Flower Moon, this name has roots in Native American and Colonial American tradition, reflecting the abundance of wildflowers that bloom across North America each spring. The moon will shine in the constellation Libra and is classified as a micromoon — the first of two in a row for 2026.

Despite being slightly smaller in appearance than a supermoon, the Flower Moon will still be a beautiful sight rising in the eastern sky at sunset. Expect a warm orange or golden glow near the horizon as the atmosphere bends the moonlight. Clear skies and a location away from city light pollution will give you the best view.
