After leaving a trail of destruction behind in Jamaica and Cuba, Hurricane Melissa is now forecast to graze Bermuda before making its way to Atlantic Canada. Here is the latest on this prolific tropical weather event.

Record-Breaking Hurricane Melissa Now Headed Toward Bermuda

Hurricane Melissa has picked up speed as it races toward Bermuda. After crawling along at an exceptionally slow speed across the Caribbean, the storm is now moving at a speed of about 30 mph. According to the Thursday afternoon update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Melissa is a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of approximately 120 mph.

The latest forecast models indicate that Melissa will continue to race across the western Atlantic, passing to the west of Bermuda. While Melissa will not likely make its third landfall as it approaches Bermuda, the winds and rain will be close enough to deliver significant impacts. Melissa is beginning to weaken as it moves into the progressively cooler waters in this part of the Caribbean. An uptick in wind shear is also working to disrupt the storm.
