14 hours agoA tragic maritime accident unfolded Saturday night in New York when a Mexican Navy training vessel collided with the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge. The crash left two crew members dead and at least 19 others injured, including two in critical condition, according to city officials.
The vessel, identified as the Cuauhtémoc, was carrying 277 people as part of an annual training cruise. Around 8:20 p.m., the ship appeared to lose power while navigating under the Brooklyn Bridge. As a result, it drifted toward a bridge pillar, causing its mast to strike the underside of the bridge.
Officials confirmed that two crew members fell from the mast during the incident and were later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Several others were injured, some while stationed high on the ship’s rigging.
Emergency crews responded swiftly, and the ship was moved to Pier 36 for further inspection. Video footage shows the mast snapping on impact, with pieces falling to the deck below. Fortunately, no structural damage has been reported on the bridge itself, which reopened to traffic later that evening.
