Minnesota Woman Killed in St. Croix Shark Attack

On January 9th, 2026, a woman from Minnesota was attacked by a shark while she was swimming in the water off Dorsch Beach, St. Croix, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Virgin Islands Police Department responded to the 911 emergency call at 4:28 p.m., local time. Fire and Emergency Medical Services, as well as Marine units, were dispatched.

Shark Attack Off St. Croix Beach Turns Fatal

The emergency medical team confirmed that the victim lost an arm below the elbow during the attack. There were reports of a possible second victim. However, St. Croix Rescue searched the area and couldn't confirm the report. The female victim, who was identified as Arlene Lillis, 56, from Minnesota, later died from her traumatic injuries.

Governor Albert Bryan, Jr. released a statement in which he said, "Our hearts are with the family and loved ones of the victim, and with everyone who witnessed this tragedy. We have been briefed on the information known at this time, and we are grateful to the bystanders who acted immediately to render aid and to the first responders who worked urgently and bravely in an effort to save her life."

Rep. Stacey Plaskett of the US Virgin Islands also expressed his condolences. In a statement, he was quoted as saying, “The loss of a loved one under such devastating circumstances is beyond words, and our entire community shares in their grief.”
