Several of the largest urban areas in the South are being put on alert for a developing winter storm. The impacts could begin as early as Friday and last through the weekend. Here is a look at what areas should be on the lookout for wintry precipitation in the days ahead.

Major Winter Storm Shaping Up for the Weekend

The list of cities that could see snow and ice in the days ahead includes some unusual suspects. While the models are still coming together, many signs are pointing to the development of a major winter storm across a large swath of the South. This weather maker is brewing just days after parts of the southern U.S. saw the flakes fly last weekend.

The likely impact zone across the southern edge of the U.S. will mean that even a few inches of snow or a coating of ice will cause significant disruptions to everyday life. Communities in the southern Plains, the Mississippi Valley, and the Southeast are generally not equipped to deal with wintry impacts to this degree.

The latest forecast models indicate that the snow will begin to fall on Friday across the Texas Panhandle and to the north into Kansas. To the east, the line of snow will reach as far as the southwestern corner of Missouri and northern Arkansas.
