More Severe Storms and Flash Flooding Return This Weekend

Saturday's Storms Will Pick Up Where Friday's Weather Left Off

It has been a rough week across the central and eastern U.S. as frequent rounds of heavy rain and severe thunderstorms rolled through the region. Most notably, a deadly derecho packing winds of 99 mph left over 800,000 customers without power earlier in the week.

The heavy rain bands associated with the active weather pattern have unleashed a flooding emergency across a large swath of the Midwest from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Indianapolis. The repeated nature of these rain events has made the region increasingly vulnerable to flooding, particularly in urban and poor-drainage areas. Forecasters are warning that flooded roads will continue to be an issue for motorists using portions of interstates 72 and 80 in this part of the country.

Another zone of storm activity is forecast to set up on Saturday across the Midwest and the Ohio Valley. Residents in this area will want to check the hourly forecast before planning outdoor activities.

Once again, Chicago will be in the area of concern. The Windy City will wake up to scattered rain showers and thunderstorms that persist into the evening hours. There will be little variation in the temperatures, with highs topping out in the upper 70s and lows bottoming out in the low 70s after the sun goes down. Chicago is under a river flood warning through 1 pm Saturday.

Other cities that should prepare for disruptive storms on Thursday include Omaha, Des Moines, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, and Columbus.
