Hurricane Season

More Tropical Activity Spinning Up in the Atlantic Basin

Alexis Thornton

Last week

Just like clockwork, the tropical Atlantic is starting to produce more weather systems. As Hurricane Erin begins to dissipate, another potential major storm is coming right on its heels. Here is the latest look at what is happening in the tropics as the busy August season marches on.

New Tropical Rainstorm Spinning in the Atlantic

A tropical rainstorm has sprung to life just north of the Leeward Islands, threatening to become the next hurricane in the Atlantic basin. The next few names up on the list of predetermined designations for tropical weather in this part of the world's oceans are Fernand, Gabrielle, and Humberto.

Forecasters have put Bermuda on alert as the new cluster of rain showers and thunderstorms starts to strengthen as it churns to the north of the Leeward Islands. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is predicting that this zone has a good chance of evolving into a tropical storm over the weekend.

Located in the northeastern corner of the Caribbean, the Leeward Islands include populated areas such as Dominica and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. The good news is that this developing system is not expected to pack as strong a punch as Erin did when it moved through last week. In addition, the forecast track indicates that the rainstorm will move away from the islands in the days ahead, rather than across them directly.
