The polar vortex is on the move again. The result will be significantly colder temperatures pulsing across the central and eastern U.S. through the end of January. Here is a look at how the shifting vortex is forecast to usher in colder weather for millions of Americans.

Shift in the Polar Vortex Responsible for Frigid Forecast

Winterlike weather is back in the picture for the central and eastern portions of the country, thanks to a more active polar vortex. The activity will usher in fluctuating temperatures, threats of snow, and the possibility of extreme cold by the end of the month.

Colder temperatures are becoming more entrenched across the eastern half of the nation on the heels of early springlike weather over the last several days. The latest forecast models suggest that the polar vortex will see an uptick in activity over the next 10 to 14 days. The resulting frigid temperatures will guide the weather pattern through at least the end of January and potentially into the first week of February. The bitterly cold air is currently building across western and central Canada.

NOAA’s 8 to 14 day temperature outlook favors below-normal temperatures across parts of the northern tier and Northeast, while above-normal warmth is more likely across the southern U.S. and Southwest as the broader pattern reshuffles.
