Much-Needed Rain Heading to the Pacific Northwest

After one of the driest Septembers on record, the Pacific Northwest braces for its first big fall storm, bringing rain, cooler temps, and gusty winds (NOAA/Weather Prediction Center).

It has been an unusually warm and dry September for the Pacific Northwest. That is all going to change in the waning days as a major change in the weather heads to this corner of the country. Here is what you need to know as the first big fall storm of the season pushes into the northwestern U.S.

It is Beginning to Feel Like Fall in the Pacific Northwest

Dramatic changes are on the way to the Pacific Northwest by the beginning of the new work week. The last few days of September will feature two distinct waves of moisture on Monday and Tuesday. The arrival of the rain and cooler temperatures will be a sharp contrast to the unusually dry September.

How dry has it been? Seattle recorded its fifth driest stretch between June 1 and September 25. Only 2.06 inches of rain fell across the Emerald City during this time period. Temperatures have also hovered a few degrees over the historical average in the largest metro area in the Northwest. These readings were as high as 8 degrees over the norm moving farther inland.

A ridge of high pressure brings late-season warmth to the Northwest, with temps 5–15°F above average and potential record challenges (weatherforecastnow.com).
