It will feel more like the spring season in parts of the southern U.S. as severe weather rears its ugly head. Meanwhile, it will be business as usual to the north with winter storms impacting parts of the Rockies, the Midwest, the northern Plains, and the Great Lakes. Read on for the details of this varied forecast through the rest of the week and into the weekend.

Forecast for the Rest of the Work Week

Mother Nature is going to deliver a little bit of everything throughout the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. in the days ahead. The incoming weather maker will churn through the region in two different rounds, lasting through the weekend.

The first arm of the storm will track ashore into northern Mexico on Wednesday, making its way into the Desert Southwest and the interior West by the end of the day. Snow will be the primary situation across the Rockies and the Mountain West, while it will be heavy rain breaking out in the Southwest.

This national forecast map shows the storm system spreading snow across the Rockies and mixed precipitation and rain farther east, valid 7pm EST Wed Jan 07, 2026 to 7am EST Thu Jan 08, 2026. (NOAA)
