1. Sand Is Being Stolen Around the World

It sounds absurd, but sand theft is a real, sometimes violent global industry. Sand is the second most extracted natural resource on Earth after water, and construction alone consumes an estimated 40 to 50 billion tons of it every year, enough raw material to bury an entire country the size of the United Kingdom.

That demand has given rise to illegal mining operations, sometimes called "sand mafias," that dredge riverbanks and beaches without permits, often with local officials paid to look the other way. The conflict has turned deadly in multiple countries, with activists, journalists, and police officers killed trying to stop illegal extraction. Singapore has imported so much sand to expand its landmass and build artificial islands that it's caused ongoing disputes with neighboring countries whose own coastlines have been stripped to supply it.
