New Report Confirms 2025 as Third-Costliest Year for Weather Disasters
Weather-related disaster costs in the U.S. almost hit a record high in 2025, largely due to the massive wildfires that engulfed parts of the Los Angeles area early in the year. These fires alone accounted for roughly $61.2 billion in economic losses, making it the costliest wildfire outbreak in American history.
The official numbers for the year were released last week by Climate Central, a non-profit climate science agency. According to the report, the year came in as the third-highest year for damages, coming in behind 2023 and 2024. The total amount of losses for the year hit $115 billion, spread out over 23 separate events.
