Nor'easter Leaves Flooded Streets, Damaged Roads Across Virginia and North Carolina

Four days of persistent wind, flooding and dangerous surf have left coastal communities across Virginia and North Carolina dealing with submerged streets and damaged roads, as the season's first nor'easter now turns its attention toward New England.

Highway 12 Closures Expand Along the Outer Banks

Conditions began improving across the mid-Atlantic Friday, but flooding remained a concern around high tide. On North Carolina's Outer Banks, severe ocean overwash forced another section of N.C. Highway 12 to close, with no reopening timeline given by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

An initial assessment Thursday identified roughly 500 feet of undermined or broken pavement near the Pea Island Visitor Center, though crews needed the water to clear before completing a more thorough damage assessment. NCDOT also closed a section of Highway 12 on Ocracoke Island between the National Park Service Pony Pens and the ferry terminal due to severe overwash, and reported 1 to 6 inches of soundside flooding in Hatteras Village between Eagle Pass and the Hatteras Ferry Terminal. Officials expect similar conditions over the next several high-tide cycles until the storm fully passes.
