Notable Aspects of the Quiet 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season

After a few monster hurricane seasons in recent years, you cannot blame those in areas prone to tropical weather for feeling a bit of relief this year. The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has been a near best-case scenario for impacts to the Caribbean and the U.S. Will that trend hang on as the season churns through its back half? Read on for a look at how this season has shaped up so far, as well as what you can expect in the weeks ahead.

Looking Back at the 2025 Tropical Weather Season Trends

There is no doubt in the minds of hurricane experts that this has been a fortunate Atlantic hurricane season thus far. There were only eight named storms through the morning of September 26. Of these eight, only two went on to become hurricanes.  According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), this is two storms and two hurricanes off the typical pace by this point in the season.

The numbers had been hovering around the norm through the end of August. It was the unusually quiet September that brought the pace to a standstill. September is usually the most active month of tropical weather in the Atlantic basin, making the lull in activity for three full weeks well off the normal pace.

Diving deeper into the trends of the 2025 season, it is notable that only one storm has made landfall on the mainland U.S. The Caribbean has also gotten off easy so far. While this part of the basin saw some level of impact from Hurricane Erin during the middle of August, the group of islands has dodged the worst of the effects.

The Gulf has also been particularly quiet. The short-lived Tropical Storm Barry that formed in late June is the only named feature to roam the Gulf, an area that is typically a hotbed of activity.

So, where have all of the storms tracked? Five of the eight named features either remained entrenched over the Central Atlantic or tracked out into the open waters of the North Atlantic. These tracks have taken the bulk of the action away from populated landmasses, limiting the overall impact of the season.

NOAA’s latest map shows the paths of 2025 Atlantic storms, including hurricanes and tropical storms that have shaped this active season (NOAA/National Weather Service).
