Temperatures are on the upswing across the central and eastern U.S. Unfortunately for those craving the springlike weather, the warmth will not stick around for long. Read on for more details about when forecasters believe winter will be back in the picture.

Timing of Unseasonable Warmth

Do not get too used to the warmer weather that is building over the central and eastern portions of the country. Forecasters are warning that cold air will pulse back through the region by the end of the weekend. The big question on everyone's minds is whether the next batch of cold air will bring along wintry precipitation.

Until then, some areas could see record-challenging highs as high pressure builds from south to north. The unseasonable warmth is expected to peak late in the week across the eastern half of the U.S. before the chill is back in the air. A good portion of the East will see temperatures that hover 10 to 20 degrees above the historical average for the middle of January. The South will see the greatest departure from normal as the mercury soars to potentially record-challenging levels.

From Jan. 8 to Jan. 10, 2026, much of the eastern U.S. is forecast to run well above normal, with the strongest warmth focused from the South through the Mid-Atlantic and into parts of New England. (Climate Central)
