California Marks One-Year Anniversary of Deadly Los Angeles Wildfires
It is a day that will live on in history across Southern California. At least a dozen wildfires broke out in the Palisades area of Los Angeles on January 7, 2025. The fires were fueled by potent Santa Ana winds, sending flames across the dry vegetation at a breakneck speed. The blazes were blamed for at least 31 fatalities and about $275 billion in economic damages.
While the fires took an unimaginable toll on the region, both physically and emotionally, the silver lining is that the lessons learned are now being used to prevent future fires from becoming as tragic. However, the rebuilding process is a slow go. Thousands of homes and businesses were destroyed in the series of blazes. As of January 6, more than 6,100 permit applications had been submitted to the local government. According to the office of Gov. Gavin Newsom, more than 2,600 of these have been approved by the corresponding city and county agencies.
