An atmospheric river is gearing up to march into the western U.S. this week, providing a sneak peek at the active winter weather pattern for this part of the country. Prior to the arrival of this volatile storm system, the West will enjoy calm and pleasant fall weather. Here is a deeper look at the timing and potential impacts of the weather maker that is waiting to strike.

Calm Weather to Start the Week Out West

A NOAA surface analysis map valid for October 20, 2025, shows high pressure settling over the western U.S. after a stormy weekend, providing a short window of calm before the next Pacific system arrives. (NOAA)

The Pacific Northwest experienced a weekend of unsettled weather that is expected to linger into Monday in some portions of the region. A storm pushing to the south from Canada will continue to impact much of Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming to start the new work week. This system brought volatile conditions to major cities such as Seattle to close out the weekend, putting a damper on outdoor activities.

The storm system that wreaked havoc across the northwestern U.S. over the weekend will track to the east early Monday, bringing high-elevation snow to the northern Rocky Mountains. The lower terrains of this region will see periodic rain showers as the moisture pushes through.
