Typhoon Tino Kills Over 40 People in the Philippines
Typhoon Tino roared ashore across portions of the Philippines on Tuesday, killing over 40 people in its path. According to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), over 24 inches of rain have been recorded since Sunday in the central portions of the Philippines.
Also known as Typhoon Kalmaegi, Tino has been unleashing heavy rain and flooding across the archipelago for days. Thousands of people were evacuated ahead of the storm in the Visayas region, including the populated portions of southern Luzon and northern Mindanao. Cebu provincial information officer Ainjeliz Orong warned that the number of casualties is likely to increase as rescue operations continue. Orong said that there are a number of unaccounted-for individuals.
Included in the death toll are six crew members aboard a military helicopter that crashed during the peak of the storm. The Huey chopper crashed in Agusan del Sur on the island of Mindanao. The crew was in the middle of a humanitarian disaster response mission when it went down. All six bodies were recovered from the crash scene. An investigation is now underway into what caused the accident.
