Possibility of Two Snow-Bearing East Coast Storms in Week Ahead

Christy Bowen

A pronounced dip in the jet stream (the sweeping cloud arc over the western Atlantic) is helping steer energy offshore, a key ingredient that could spark one or more coastal storms near the East Coast later this week.

The track of two storms expected to ignite off the Atlantic coastline next week could bring accumulating snow to parts of the Northeast by the weekend. Here is a look at what forecasters will be watching in the days ahead.

Two Potential Coastal Storms Could Bring Snow to the Northeast

A pair of coastal storms may bring a taste of winter to a large swath of the northeastern U.S. this week. Colder air is making its way back into this part of the nation, bringing an end to the mild January weather that marked the first of the year. This infusion of cold air will help to support the development of snow if the two storms manage to bring in enough moisture to the region.

A dip in the jet stream over the eastern U.S. later in the week will influence where the coastal storm comes to life as well as where it heads next after its formation. A storm that moves farther to the east would simply end up in the open waters of the Atlantic. This track would translate to just a few flurries to the mid-Atlantic and the coastal region of New England.

This probability map shows where a late-week coastal setup could deliver at least a light accumulation (0.25"+ liquid-equivalent) across parts of the Northeast, depending on how close the storm hugs the shoreline.

Conversely, a track that brings the storm closer to the coast would likely result in meaningful snow for a good part of the mid-Atlantic and up into the southeastern corner of New England beginning late Thursday. The path and the strength of this initial storm will also determine the future movement of another storm expected to form a few days later.
