A surge of rain will translate to a soggy Labor Day weekend for much of the southern and central portions of the U.S. Here is a look at these specific regions and what you can expect in the days ahead.

Where to Expect Rain This Weekend

It is setting up to be a weekend of unsettled weather for two different areas of the country. One zone of impact will extend from Wyoming and down into New Mexico, while the other zone will stretch from Texas to Florida and down into the Carolinas. The inclement conditions could wash out some holiday weekend plans while also raising the risk of flash flooding.

Ahead of the long weekend, travelers hoping to get a head start on the holiday on Friday may encounter delays on the roads and in the skies across New England. Motorists and air travelers may also experience disruptions on Friday across the Southeast, the Rocky Mountain region, and the Plains states.

A large area of low pressure moving to the east from the Gulf and toward Florida will translate to a consistent stream of moisture and the chance of gusty storms for the southeastern coastline. Forecasters are warning that this weather maker could take on tropical characteristics by the beginning of next week, potentially evolving into a tropical rainstorm.

The Southeast is the corner of the U.S. that will be the most at risk of experiencing flash flooding issues. The threat of flooding will be the greatest in urban and low-lying areas.

Frequent lightning strikes could also disrupt outdoor activities at times in a region from Texas and to the east into Florida, including Georgia and portions of the Carolinas. Some of the strongest storms could generate waterspouts, presenting dangers for boaters and beachgoers over the unofficial end to the summer.

The thunderstorm activity is forecast to be the strongest throughout South Florida. For instance, Miami will get caught in the crosshairs of the stormy activity. The peak of the storms is likely to strike this part of South Florida on Monday, just when travelers are heading home after the long weekend.
