A magnitude 2.3 earthquake rattled Westchester County Tuesday morning, sending light shaking across communities from the Hudson Valley to Yonkers — a rare seismic event for the New York City suburbs.

The epicenter is located just half a mile west of Sleepy Hollow in Westchester County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS recorded the magnitude 2.3 quake at approximately 10:17 am ET. The agency placed the depth at roughly 4.6 miles (7.4 kilometers) beneath the surface. USGS officials said they did not expect any damage from the tremor, and no injuries were immediately reported.

Light shaking was felt across a wide swath of Westchester County, north into the Hudson Valley, and south toward Yonkers. Residents reported feeling it in White Plains, Hawthorne, Rye Brook, Mamaroneck, Harrison, and other nearby communities. The USGS received more than 300 "Did You Feel It?" reports from the region. Sleepy Hollow sits about 30 miles north of New York City.
