Recap of This Year's UN World Climate Summit

40 minutes agoThe annual COP30 summit was held earlier in November in Brazil, bringing world leaders together to discuss the growing impacts of a warming planet. While the attendees were able to agree to a new climate deal, they failed to come to an agreement on a way out of the reliance on fossil fuels. Here is a look at what happened at this year's climate summit.
Loose Climate Deal Reached at COP30
The often chaotic COP30 summit became contentious at times as talks went well into the night. Representatives of over 190 nations met in the Brazilian port city of Belém to talk about the future of the environment. The location in the city known as the gateway to the Amazon was symbolic, as this is one of the planet's most threatened ecosystems.
The talks were anything but peaceful. Insiders reported being worried that the summit would collapse with no progress made. Dozens of countries pushed back against the proposal that did not mention the intentional transition away from the use of gas, coal, and oil. Despite the bickering, the representatives were able to come to a basic agreement, culminating with COP30 president André Corrêa do Lago gaveling through a deal.
The official wording of the agreement did not mention any type of fossil fuels. However, it did include an agreement on the importance of deforestation.
