Record-breaking Cold Temperatures in Store for Millions

Over 100 million Americans are going to be left shivering in the days ahead as a blast of Arctic air envelopes much of the eastern U.S. Here is a closer look at the timing of these midwinter-like temperatures.

Arctic Air Bearing Down on Millions of Americans

A surge of Arctic air is set to invade the eastern U.S. beginning this weekend, bringing along unseasonably cold temperatures and the chance of snow for some. Forecasters are predicting that this will be the coldest temperatures since last spring, dipping as far as the Deep South.

The initial round of cold air will come in behind an Alberta clipper storm that is diving down from southwestern Canada to end the work week. The noticeably colder temperatures will first impact the Plains and the Mississippi Valley beginning this weekend. A pronounced dip in the jet stream is expected to develop by Monday, reinforcing the Arctic air.
