Remains Believed to Be Hurricane Helene Victim Found Nearly 2 Years Later

It has been nearly two years since Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida and roared into the interior portions of the Southeast. All this time later, authorities in Tennessee are now investigating the discovery of human remains belonging to what is believed to be a victim of this catastrophic storm.

Human Remains Could Be Another Helene Victim

Local officials in Washington County, Tennessee, are working to determine if recently uncovered human remains can be blamed on 2024's Hurricane Helene. The remains were removed by specialists in the Jackson Island area of Washington County.

According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office (WCSO), "The remains are believed to be from a victim of the Hurricane Helene Flood."Because the investigation is ongoing, authorities have not identified the remains, nor have they provided additional information about the case.

Helene came ashore in the Big Bend region of Florida as a Category 4 hurricane on September 26, 2024. Helene first became a tropical storm on September 24, intensifying quickly as it feasted on the exceptionally warm water of the Gulf. It was just one day later that Helene reached the designation of a hurricane. The rapid intensification meant that residents in the path of the storm had little time to prepare.
