Japan's most restless volcano is making headlines again. Sakurajima, the active volcano that looms over Kagoshima Bay on the southern island of Kyushu, erupted on Saturday. In its most significant blast of the year, it sent a towering column of ash and debris nearly 3,400 meters into the sky, triggering flight cancellations, road closures, and safety warnings across the region.

The eruption originated from the volcano's Minamidake crater shortly after noon local time. The explosion launched volcanic debris that rained down as far as a kilometer from the crater, while thick ash drifted across Kagoshima City and neighboring communities, coating streets, rooftops, and vehicles in a familiar gray layer that residents of this city know all too well.
