Forecasters are zeroing in on the specifics of a soggy and snowy holiday week for California. Read on for more information detailing the precise timing of two major atmospheric rivers taking aim at the Golden State just in time for Christmas.

First Atmospheric River of the Week Already Hammering California

The heavy rain and flooding that have marked the weather over the last few weeks in the Pacific Northwest are tracking to the south, bringing all of California into the fold. The line of moisture will move from north to south throughout the week, delivering a host of severe impacts to the state during the busy holiday week.

The first of the duo of atmospheric rivers fired up over the weekend. Northern and Central California will bear the brunt of this firehose of moisture through Wednesday. Widespread rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are in store for the San Francisco Bay area, as well as the bulk of the Sacramento Valley. Locally higher amounts are possible as the region picks up one to two times the normal amount of rain over the entirety of December.

This 72-hour rainfall forecast shows widespread heavy precipitation impacting Northern and Central California as the first atmospheric river of the week moves south, increasing the risk of flooding, debris flows, and road washouts. NOAA / NWS WPC
