Northern New Jersey experienced another jolt on the afternoon of August 5, when a 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck Bergen County, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake’s epicenter was located near Hillsdale, NJ, occurring at 12:11 p.m. Local officials quickly notified residents, assuring them there were no reports of injuries or damage.
Bergenfield Mayor Arvin Amatorio noted that residents reported feeling “a quick jolt or hearing a loud thump” but emphasized the borough is monitoring the situation. The Leonia Police Department urged residents to keep 911 lines open for emergencies only, as the county’s communication center was receiving multiple non-emergency calls.
