Wave after wave of Arctic air will pair with ample moisture in the northern U.S. to create a messy weekend for the Midwest and into the Northeast. Here is a look at what type of weather disruptions you should prepare for in the northern tier of the nation.

Train of Clipper Storms Targeting the Northeastern Quadrant of the Country

Both air travelers and motorists could be in store for a weekend of disruptions as frequent rounds of snow take aim at a zone from the Upper Midwest, the Great Lakes, the Ohio Valley, and the Northeast. A train of clipper storms will ride along with the bursts of Arctic air, generating everything from light flurries to lake-effect snow to dangerous squalls.

A NOAA GOES-19 satellite image shows a broad swath of Arctic air and storm clouds stretching across the northern United States, the atmospheric setup fueling a train of fast-moving clipper systems and repeated snow chances into the weekend. (NOAA)

It has already been a week of treacherous travel across parts of the Midwest and the interior Northeast. Several vehicular crashes were reported as blustery conditions whipped the snow around. A 30-vehicle pileup near Elkhart, Indiana, on Interstate 90 brought traffic to a standstill on Wednesday. Another multi-vehicle crash in western Pennsylvania on Thursday caused major backups on Interstate 80.
