The central and southern Plains will be the primary targets of a renewed risk of severe weather beginning on Thursday. Here is an early look at what you should expect in the days ahead as this batch of storms fires up across the heartland.

Plains Next Up for Severe Weather Concerns

The same weather maker that is ushering in heavy rain showers and gusty thunderstorms to the interior portions of the Southwest is going to shift into the Plains by the end of the work week, increasing the threat of dangerous impacts and travel disruptions. The storm will begin to feed on the warm and moist air coming up from the Gulf as the energy moves to the east, supporting the development of strong storms for those in its path.

A NOAA forecast map shows expected precipitation totals through Sunday, October 26, 2025, with the heaviest rainfall centered over north-central Texas, central Oklahoma, and southern Kansas. (NOAA)

The action is forecast to fire up late Thursday across parts of eastern New Mexico, northwestern Texas, and the southwestern corner of Kansas. The line of storms will push to the east and intensify throughout the day on Friday in a zone from north-central Texas and up into central Oklahoma and south-central Kansas. Although you cannot rule out the chance of isolated tornadoes, the most concerning impacts will be strong winds and flash flooding.
