Severe Weather Threat Pushes Into the Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday

It was a rocky day of weather across the Upper Midwest and the Great Lakes on Monday. Appleton, Wisconsin, is cleaning up after a tornado ripped through the community in the eastern part of the state, knocking out power to thousands and destroying several homes.

The persistent rounds of thunderstorms will continue to fire up along the northern fringe of a massive heat dome anchored over the central U.S. to close out the month of July. Potential impacts embedded in these storm cells include high winds, hail, and heavy rain capable of triggering flash flooding.

Forecasters warn that the unpredictability of this particular weather system will make it difficult to pinpoint exactly when and where the storms will erupt this week. After menacing the central U.S. on Monday, the greatest concentration of storms is forecast to move into the mid-Atlantic and parts of the Northeast on Tuesday.

Cities in the potential impact zone on Tuesday include Charlotte to the south and New York City to the north. The focal point of the most severe storms is predicted to set up in a zone from Roanoke, Virginia, to the northeast through Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.
