You don't need a meteorologist or a high-tech weather app to spot a storm coming. Some of the most reliable warning signs have been around for centuries — shifts in temperature, the look of the sky, the sound of the birds. If you know what to watch and listen for, you can often pick up on severe weather an hour or more before it hits.

You won't beat your local weather watch or warning for accuracy, but these natural cues can give you a useful head start on whether to grab an umbrella, change your plans, or take shelter.

A Sudden Change in Temperature

A noticeable drop in temperature is one of the most reliable signs that a storm is on the way. One minute the sun is warm on your skin; the next, the air feels cold and unsettled. That's usually a cold front pushing in. Cold, dense air slides under warmer surface air and forces it upward, which builds clouds, picks up the wind, and often sets off rain or thunderstorms.
