GOES-19 satellite imagery shows a massive late-season winter storm sweeping across the Midwest and Great Lakes while pushing a powerful cold front toward the East Coast.

The Ides of March brought in a monster winter storm to millions of people across the northern half of the country on Sunday. Here is the latest on this last gasp of winter that has been delivering blizzard conditions, damaging winds, and record snow to a large swath of the Upper Midwest and the Great Lakes.

Heavy Snow to Linger Across Northern U.S. on Monday

Winter is not slinking out of the picture any time soon. A major winter storm event unleashed across much of the northern U.S. this weekend. Snow has been coming down at rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour in the heart of the action in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Over 20 inches of snow has already been recorded in a zone from southern Minnesota to central Wisconsin. For instance, snow totals of 28 inches have been confirmed in Marinette, Wisconsin.

The core of a low-pressure system will advance a cold front into the eastern U.S. on Monday. Snow is in the forecast for some of the areas that were dealing with severe thunderstorms on Sunday as the mercury falls. Forecasters are warning that rain could transition to snow quickly across the Ohio Valley and the Appalachians as the cold front reaches this part of the region.
