Soggy Memorial Day Weekend in Store for Eastern Half of the U.S.

4 hours agoThose with outdoor plans over the Memorial Day weekend might want to make alternate arrangements. Forecasters are predicting that it could be a soggy weekend for millions of Americans in a zone from Texas to New England. Here is an early look at what you can expect as you gear up to celebrate the unofficial start to the summer season.
Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding Threaten Holiday Weekend Plans
Heavy rain, flash flooding, and other severe weather impacts could affect outdoor activities over the three-day holiday weekend. The primary zone of impact will encompass several states from the south-central U.S. and up into New England. The majority of the Rockies, the West Coast, and the far Southeast will remain dry over this stretch of days.
Memorial Day 2026 comes earlier this year due to the fact that May 31 is on a Sunday. Mother Nature has not quite gotten the memo that Americans typically use the weekend set aside to honor fallen service members to also welcome in summer. It is likely that many graveside memorial services and other outdoor activities may be disrupted by the weather.
Although the rainfall will provide relief for areas dealing with drought, the steady stream of moisture will also raise the threat of flash flooding. Widespread rainfall totals are expected to come in at 1 to 4 inches over the weekend in an area from Texas to the northeast into western Tennessee and Kentucky.
The hardest-hit area could see localized amounts of over 6 inches. This includes the San Antonio and Houston metro areas, in addition to portions of Arkansas and Louisiana.
While the weekend will not be a total washout, residents in the eastern half of the country should prepare for disruptions on the roads, to sporting events, and any other outdoor activities. The coastal Southeast is expected to dodge the worst of the impacts, while the interior portions of this region may see sporadic afternoon and evening thunderstorms with the natural heating of the day.
