A spearfishing trip near Australia’s Rottnest Island turned deadly when a 38-year-old diver was killed in a suspected great white shark attack as his friends watched in horror.

Authorities say the attack happened just before 10 am on May 16 at Horseshoe Reef, a popular offshore area near Perth.

The man was spearfishing offshore and floating near the surface about 65 feet from the boat when a shark, about 13 feet long, struck.
