More warmth is on the way for the Midwest. However, first, the region will need to get through a few more days of cooler weather. And once the warmth fully arrives, it will come with the threat of severe weather. Read on for a closer look at this volatile forecast for the nation's heartland.

Cooler Start to the Week Before Warmup Takes Hold

The Midwest has been pushed through a batch of cooler air to close out March, but the next round of warmer temperatures is already arriving. Temperatures took a dramatic tumble heading into the weekend, serving as a sharp contrast to the warmth from earlier in the week. This roller coaster of temperatures is quite typical in the Midwest during the spring months.

A cold front tracked through the Midwest late last week, sending temperatures tumbling 15 to 30 degrees. For example, Indianapolis topped out with a high of just 46 degrees on Friday, barely inching up into the low 50s over the weekend.

Low temperatures plunged across the Midwest and into the Northeast as a late-week cold front dragged cooler air across the region, setting up a chilly end to March before the next warmup begins. (Climate Central)
