A classic Omega weather pattern is delivering stagnant weather across most of the U.S. this week. While the weather conditions vary between regions, the constant is that you should not expect much to change in the days ahead. Read on for a closer look at how the Omega block impacts weather, and what that means for the forecast in your neck of the woods.

What Is an Omega Block?

An Omega block weather pattern is building across the U.S. this week, leaving much of the country under the same conditions for the next few days. This specific type of weather pattern gets its name from the shape of the upper air configuration that presents as the Greek letter omega.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this stubborn pattern is the result of two cutoff lows positioned with a blocking high in the middle of them. The Omega block sets up when a large ridge of high pressure forms between the two competing troughs of low pressure flanking each side of the high.
