The worst of the winter weather impacts triggered by a far-reaching storm started to ease up across the central U.S. on Sunday. However, the danger was just ramping up for the eastern quarter of the country as the storm continued on its journey across dozens of states. Here is the latest on this disruptive weather maker.

Latest on Monster Winter Storm as it Tracks to the East

About 1 million customers were left without power on Sunday in the wake of a massive winter storm. The bulk of the outages have been blamed on freezing rain that turned to ice throughout the day Saturday and into the overnight hours. The accumulating ice snapped trees and power lines. Outages began to pile up throughout the day Sunday as the storm moved out of the central portions of the U.S and to the east.

Atlanta was coated in a layer of ice on Sunday morning. Increasing wind speeds and falling temperatures amplified the impacts of the ice. Sleet and freezing rain were the major hazards across northern Georgia and up into the Carolinas and Virginia on Sunday, turning roads and sidewalks into skating rinks.
