A strengthening storm is going to bring significant rain to parched New England over the next few days. Unfortunately, this influx of moisture will miss the drought-stricken portions of the mid-Atlantic and the Southeast. Read on for what the latest forecast models are predicting for rainfall totals and timing.

Potent Storm System Set to Douse New England

A storm system pushing in from the Midwest will intensify as it churns toward New England in the latter part of the week. While the rain will bring noticeable relief for the ongoing drought in New England, the moisture is not expected to make it into the Carolinas and Virginia, a part of the country where the drought is even more concerning.

According to the latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor, over 97% of Virginia is under the designation of severe drought or worse. Climatologists are warning local officials in this region that the higher temperatures looming on the horizon as summer approaches will pair with the drought to impact agricultural interests and water supplies.

While some parts of the Carolinas and Virginia may see a few stray rain showers, the precipitation will not be enough to put a dent in the drought. A few areas could see up to a tenth of an inch out of this system; however, much more rain is needed to alleviate the growing concerns.

The weather maker will reach Pennsylvania, New York, and West Virginia during the day and evening hours on Wednesday. The energy associated with this storm will gather more moisture when it reaches the Atlantic coastline on Thursday and Friday. This will result in regular waves of showers and thunderstorms in a zone from West Virginia to the northeast into New England.
