A glacier in the Antarctic experienced the most rapid retreat in modern history recently, sounding the alarm bell on the impacts of climate change on sea levels. Here is a look at what is happening to the Hektoria Glacier and what it means for the planet.

Hektoria Glacier Undergoes Worrisome Rapid Retreat

A new study out of the University of Colorado is painting a dire picture of rising sea levels. The Hektoria Glacier on the Antarctic Peninsula shrank by almost 50% in only two months, marking the fastest retreat ever recorded. Scientists are warning that the manner in which it shrank spells trouble for sea levels around the globe.

Measuring about the size of Philadelphia, the Hektoria Glacier is a chain of mountains that emerges from the Antarctic Peninsula toward South America. This part of the planet had been previously identified as one of the fastest-warming regions.
