Sturgeon Moon to Shine Bright Over the U.S. This Weekend
Bree-Anna Burick
7 hours agoThe August full moon, known as the Sturgeon Moon, is set to rise this Friday, August 8, and will light up the night sky into the early hours of Saturday, August 9. The moon gets its name from the sturgeon fish, which were once abundant in North America’s Great Lakes and waterways during late summer.
The full moon will be visible just after sunset Friday, and hit its peak at around 3:55am ET on Saturday morning, glowing at nearly 100% illumination.
The Sturgeon Moon is also the last full moon of the meteorological summer, making it a perfect send-off before fall edges closer. And unlike some full moons that hide behind seasonal clouds, this one has a decent chance of showing up in most parts of the country.
