It was a messy end to the weekend for a swath of the Ohio Valley and into the Northeast. Will the active weather pattern persist into the start of the new work week? Here is a look at the forecast, featuring a little bit of everything for this corner of the country.

Weather Roller Coaster Unfolding Across the Ohio Valley and the Northeast

The clash of cold air from the north and warmer air coming up from the south birthed the formation of powerful thunderstorms to close out the weekend across much of the Ohio Valley and the Northeast. Storms packing high winds, flooding downpours, and hail roamed the region on Sunday ahead of an early-week cooldown.

The cooldown is now settling into the eastern U.S. on the heels of an unseasonably warm weekend. While the interior portions of the Northeast experienced the warmest temperatures over the last few days, the mercury still hovered at about 10 to 15 degrees above the historical average for places such as New York City. For instance, the Big Apple saw temperatures climb into the 60s over the weekend, well above the norm for the middle of March.

The stormy conditions are moving out to sea on Monday; however, a surge of cooler air coming in behind the activity will continue to present inclement conditions for millions of Americans. The mercury was on a steep downward trajectory on Monday morning, raising the risk of icy spots on bridges and overpasses in some areas as standing water left from Sunday began to freeze.
