This week's blast of Arctic air served as a reminder that widespread winter weather is right around the corner. With the colder temperatures will come an increasing chance of snow. Here are a few interesting facts about snow that you may not know.

Tropical Snow Locales

While most people associate snow with the northern two-thirds of the country, the white stuff has come down in several far southern locales. For example, San Diego has seen multiple rounds of snow flurries over the years. The city has notched an official accumulation of a trace of snow numerous times. Just up the road, downtown Los Angeles has also seen accumulating snowfall on at least four different occasions. A top reading of 2 inches was recorded in 1932 in the City of Angels.

The border town of Brownsville, Texas, delighted in its first White Christmas when it recorded 1.5 inches of snow on Christmas Day of 2004. The event marked the city's only measurable snowfall going back to records being kept in 1895.
