A cooldown will take hold of the western U.S. by the weekend as the chance of wildfires increases across the Great Basin. Here is a look at what is happening out West in the days ahead.

Surge of Cooler Air Invading the Western U.S.

Cooler air is on the way for the western third of the country. Some of the highest elevations may even get some snow due to the change in the weather pattern. Meanwhile, sporadic thunderstorms packing gusty winds could trigger and spread wildfires.

The cooldown in the West will happen as heat builds across the central and eastern U.S. to kick off the weekend. The arrival of cooler air will support the development of gusty storms and rain showers while the top terrains could see the snowflakes fly.
