The Gulf's Most Unexpected Spring Break Regulars? Great White Sharks

2 hours agoA landmark new study has confirmed what researchers long suspected: the Gulf of Mexico is a regular winter home for great white sharks migrating thousands of miles from the cold waters of Atlantic Canada.
The findings, published this week in the peer-reviewed journal Wildlife Research, are reshaping what scientists know about one of the ocean's most iconic apex predators. And they have real implications for beach safety, conservation policy, and our understanding of just how connected the western North Atlantic ecosystem truly is.
What the Research Found
The study, coordinated by global ocean research nonprofit OCEARCH, tracked the movements of 92 white sharks tagged along the Atlantic coast between Nova Scotia, Canada, and Jacksonville, Florida, over more than a decade of fieldwork spanning 2012 to 2023.
Using a combination of satellite-linked smart positioning, pop-up archival tags, and acoustic tags, researchers found that 57 of those 92 sharks, representing all life stages from juveniles to adults, spent significant time in the Gulf or the Straits of Florida. The sharks' winter residency window runs primarily from December through May.
