A 10-year-old girl died Sunday at Jackson Memorial Hospital, becoming the third fatality from a devastating boating collision that happened last week in Miami's Biscayne Bay. The Miami sailing community is struggling to process this latest loss.

The accident occurred around 11 a.m. on July 28 between Monument and Hibiscus Islands when a sailboat carrying young sailors collided with a commercial barge. Six people ended up in the water - five girls between ages 7 and 13, plus a 19-year-old woman.

What Happened During the Collision

Coast Guard Petty Officer Nicholas Strasburg explained that the sailing vessel went underneath the barge during impact. Emergency responders rushed all victims to local hospitals, but two girls - ages 7 and 13 - were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Two other children remained in critical condition following their rescue. The 10-year-old who died Sunday had been fighting for her life at Jackson Memorial Hospital since the accident occurred.
